Simphiwe Felicia Khumalo is a professional nurse holding a bachelor’s degree from the Medical University of Southern Africa (MEDUNSA). She is passionate about oncology care with extensive training and experience during a 10-year period at Life Healthcare Groenkloof Hospital as an oncology nurse. She also plays the role of a caregiver, counsellor, manager, and patient educator, working together with physicians and oncologists, and coordinates with other team members to ensure the best quality care for patients. She recognises and identifies cancer symptoms, and cancer-related issues, creates customised care plans, assessing, and records patient progress.
She administers medication, chemotherapy, stem cell transplant, platelets and other treatments as advised by the oncologist. She plans on continuing her education beyond a bachelor’s degree to improve her skills, knowledge, and career prospects. She is currently working as a research oncology nurse under UKZN-CIDERU’s multi lung cancer project.
She has paediatric care experience from the Department of Health in Pretoria west and Netcare UNITAS (Centurion) between 2006-2007, managing individualized childcare by promoting and restoring children’s health through the nursing process collaborating with physicians and a multidisciplinary team providing physical, psychological support to patients and families. She gained experience as a wellness nurse for Mercedes Benz South Africa company in Pretoria screening, providing care, promoting health (2008).
